Volcanoes National Park is located in northwestern Rwanda, bordering Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. It's approximately 105 kilometers (2-2.5 hours drive) from Kigali, making it one of the most accessible mountain gorilla habitats in Africa.
The park covers an area of 160 square kilometers and is part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area. It encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountain range: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. These dormant volcanoes range in altitude from 2,300 to 4,507 meters (Mount Karisimbi being the highest).
The park's diverse ecosystems include bamboo forests, montane forests, open grassland, swamps, and heath zones at various elevations. This diverse habitat supports not only mountain gorillas but also golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffaloes, giant forest hogs, bushbucks, and over 200 bird species.
The park headquarters at Kinigi is where all gorilla treks begin, with a morning briefing before visitors are assigned to different gorilla families.
