Your safari adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your Kigali hotel after breakfast. Enjoy a scenic drive (~2.5 hrs) to Akagera National Park through Rwanda's beautiful countryside.
Upon reaching the park, begin your wildlife experience with a short game drive en route to your accommodation. Look out for giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species along the way. Check in to your lodge in time for lunch and a brief rest.
After lunch, embark on a boat trip on Lake Ihema, the largest lake in the park. This spectacular water safari allows you to observe hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, and elephants coming to drink by the shore. The lake is also home to numerous waterbirds including African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and the rare shoebill stork.
Return to your accommodation as the sun sets for dinner and your first overnight stay in the park. Relax on your deck or in the lounge area, listening to the sounds of the African wilderness.
Rise early for breakfast before setting out on a comprehensive 6-hour game drive through the northern sections of the park. This extensive drive offers the best opportunities to spot the Big Five and other wildlife when they are most active. Your expert guide will track animals and share fascinating information about the park's ecology and animal behavior.
Throughout the day, enjoy excellent birdwatching opportunities with over 500 species present in the park, including rare savannah and wetland species.
Enjoy a packed lunch at one of the park's scenic viewpoints, allowing for continued wildlife observation during the midday hours.
After a short rest at the lodge, venture out for a special night game drive, a rare opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife. Look for bushbabies, genets, civets, hyenas, and even the elusive leopard. The African savannah takes on a completely different atmosphere after dark.
Return to your accommodation for dinner and share stories of your day's adventures around the campfire before retiring for your second night in the park.
After an early breakfast, check out of your accommodation and embark on a final game drive through southern sections of the park you may not have covered yet. This provides a last opportunity to spot animals you might have missed on previous drives.
As you exit the park, visit Imigongo, a cultural arts center, for lunch and souvenir shopping. Imigongo is known for its distinctive black and white geometric art forms, a traditional Rwandan art style. Here you can purchase authentic crafts directly from local artisans.
